combining cad models
1996.06.07
For the last two days I have been generating perspectives of the Heidi Weber Pavilion (db.zurich). The drawings are fine but I still feel there is something lacking; they are nothing more than drawings that can be created over and over again. They are not analytical and they don't add much information concerning the building. (Of course, if this were an unbuilt building, the perspective, axonometrics, and elevations alone would be a greater contribution.) I have thought of a way to make the drawings and data more interesting and more informative by combining db.zurich with other building databases, picking those databases first that are at the same comparative scale.
I always wanted to compare the Heidi Weber Pavilion with Plecnik's Houses Under a Common Roof. It might not start with this comparison though (mostly because it will involve too much data manipulation--go easy while experimenting.) I could easily combine db.zurich with db.savoye or hejduk/db.bye or even kahn/db.hurva. In any case, whatever two buildings are combined, orchestrate the buildings to produce the most provocative drawings.
Concerning a Savoye/Weber comparison, what would it be like to see the lower story of Savoye two stories high? The elevated box will be like the independent roof of Weber. There are immediate implications of how to elaborate on the architectural promenade formula.
In general, the record project can be an ongoing investigation of comparative architectural scale and also an investigation of different manipulative things that can be done with the computer and models.
large fantastic architectural plan
1996.06.07
Today started thinking about creating a large fantastic architectural plan, perhaps a la Campo Marzio. This plan, however, will be very much a fantasy all around because every aspects of it, including its greater context, will be totally made up. Will it be a city, an urban context, or one enormous building or perhaps some strange campus of buildings. I'm just not sure right now.
Projects like Hadrian's Villa and the Villas of Pliny come to mind in terms of similar programs, but inspiration can also be found in other Piranesi projects (besides the Campo Marzio), like his plan of the Collagia. I wonder how much will be created from scratch using the computer, or whether crazy plans are draw by hand and then translate into CAD data?
This may turn out to be another project that I never really do, but if I do attempt something like it, it will be part of my effort to create special drawings.
(1996.06.27) Just thought how the Parkway project already is a fantastic plan and that perhaps I should just continue to work out the details of that composition. Also, I could produce an ongoing notebook/document of imaginative plan compositions, i.e., manipulate any and all of the existing plan data already available. This scheme seems more promising.
