The Velabrum. The etymology of the word is uncertain. Varro derived it a vehendo and thereby supported the traditional view, which there seems to be no good reason to doubt, that this district was very swampy until it was drained, toward the close of the regal period. A distinction appears to have been made between the Velabrum maius and the Velabrum minus, but we do not know what it was. In historical times the Velabrum was a most important center of industrial and commercial activity, being especially frequented by dealers in all kinds of food-stuffs, oil, and wine. |
