Last night, I began reading The Autobiography of an Idea by Louis Sullivan. I started with Chapter X because that's the one about Louis' time in Philadelphia, and surprisingly found that some things haven't changed.

"His relaxation on Sundays was Fairmount Park and a walk up the rough road of the Wissahickon valley, a narrow beauteous wilderness such as Louis had never seen, and with which he was completely charmed. He loved the solitude through which the Wissahickon purled its way. The companionship of the wild was soothing to him. The isolation gave him comfort and surcease. Thus passed a hot summer [of 1873]."

I took up biking through the Wissahickon valley in my mid-forties, and, of course, Louis is completely right about the place. It's now a couple of years since I've been there, but, since my bike is already in the car and it is a hot day, I think I know what I'll be doing this afternoon--a prelude to Reenactment Season 2006.
