I am willing to propose that Piranesi uses [the buildings of] Alexander Severus to signify the beginning of the end. If this is so, Piranesi is especially clever because he associates the beginning of the end directly with the Campo Marzio's true beginnings. Furthermore, [the buildings of] Alexander Severus then also mark the beginning of the Pagan-Christian inversion, and I could point to the "inversion" motifs evident within the porticus around the altar of Mars and within the porticus at the end of the Equiria.

If I succeed in putting something completely other together, do I then run the risk of no longer relating to the real world? I suppose I do run that risk, but since Quondam isn't real in the first place, it really doesn't matter.

A rare church type that was 'popular' during and just after Helena's lifetime is the double basilica. The Cathedral at Trier, Germany (Constantine's imperial capital during much of the first twenty years of his 31 year reign) is still on the site of an enormous double basilica that dates from 326, and indeed is today still two churches connected like Siamese twins.
