The index of the Encyclopedia Ichnographica alphabetically categorizes places, persons, things, and concepts related to the Ichnographia Campi Martii, and each listing will eventually be a hyperlink to an article on and/or illustration of the designated subject. Since this encyclopedia is an electronic book, the index also acts as a secondary table of contents whereby the reader can browse the list and choose subjects at random, thus enabling a customization of the Ichnographiam narrative.

The index separates the specific places named within the Ichnographia from the remaining list of proper names and things which Piranesi designates within the Ichnographiam. Names and topics related to the Ichnographia, but not appearing within the large plan itself, are offset and highlighted.

For the convienence of easy search and download, the index is divided into four sections.
