Templum Hercules Custodis

templum : literally, a space marked out; hence, in particular, in augury, an open place for observation, marked out by the auger with his staff : an open, clear, broad space, a curcuit : a consecrated or sacred place, a sanctuary : a place dedicated to some particular deity, a fane, temple, shrine
Hercules : son of Jupiter and Alcmena, husband of Dejanira, and, after his deification, of Hebe, the god of strength and the gaurdian of riches, to whone, therefore, tithes were offered; he was also the guide of the Muses; the poplar was sacred to him



The temple of Hercules Custos. This temple was built to Hercules in his capacity as gaurdian of the circus Flaminius, sometime between the date of the circus, 221 B.C. and 189 B.C. It was restored by Sulla, and is mentioned in the first century. Its exact site is unknown, but it was near the east end of the circus. (Platner)
