Gerard van Opstal (Obstal)
sculptor; b. 1604 (at Antwerp, Belgium); d. 1668.
He began the practice of his profession in Flanders, and was called to France by Richelieu in 1630. He executed decorative sculpture at the Louvre, Tuileries, Hotel Carnavalet, the portal of the hospital of La Salprêtrière, the Palais Royale, the Palais de Justice, and the Hôtel Lambert, all in Paris. He held the office of sculpteur ordinaire des bâtiments da roi.
