At Düsseldorf there was concern to preserve existing buildings and facades, so we buried the new building in the centre of the city block -- put pulled out an entrance pavilion, as it were, to represent and symbolise the whole museum. It also marks the start of the mandatory public footway, crossing the site -- these short cut footpaths are a democratic requirement in many German competitions though I'm not convinced that it's in the best interest of urban centres as it tends to weaken the city block as an entity. |
