thanks brian, i hadn't seen these. i think it was before i joined the list.

a third essay might be based on "iconography and electronics upon a generic architecture," and the focusing of electronics on THE WALL (the place where architecture occurs, to a great extent). if your first essay is about the building in its context, and the second about the context itself, and urbanism, the third would be about the making of the building. and it's interesting to think about this issue of electronic surfaces -- the transformative, de-materializing aspect of it. as always, venturi is bucking the trend of expressing precious / exotic / industrial / green / whatever materials in favor of expressing some other content that has nothing to do with the building material. and though venturi doesn't go there, it's just a small step to another idea, that of the building as real time, interactive screen, an urban scaled monitor, interacting with individuals/companies/governments/whatever all over the world, further blurring the distinction between virtual and "real" space by making the leap from private to public. i believe this also touches on some of what you propose in your electro-thesis (though i haven't read the whole thing). kevin kennon's lehmann brothers building on seventh avenue here in nyc, is a perfect example of these ideas (previously posted photo attached again).
