John Notman, Laurel Hill Cemetery (Philadelphia, 1836). |
"Philadelphia's preeminent necropolis," Laurel Hill is the second oldest rural cemetery in the country, and with Grove Street in New Haven and Mount Auburn in Cambridge established a pattern for development which has seen little deviation since. One of the architect's first commissions, it was won in competition with entries from Strickland and Walter, among others. The grounds, situated on a choice piece of land overlooking the Schuylkill, are laid out in Romantic spirit and contain many extremely fine examples of period funerary sculpture. A Gothic chapel designed by Notman and other buildings on the premises have long been demolished, but his entrance gate and offices remain.
