Artifacts of the Bianconi vs Piranesi 'Circus of Caracalla' affair   1772-1789

From "Count Heinrich von Brühl (1700-1763). A Saxon Patron in Europe":
...[Bianconi] lived in Dresden between 1750 and 1764. On the point of leaving the city [Dresden] to retire to Rome as ambassador of Saxony...
Bianconi was also the object of the research by the Bolognese Germanist Giulia Cantarutti39, who aimed to follow his activity in Rome, after the return from Dresden. Bianconi (who used the formula "we Saxons" in his private correspondence with Filippo Hercolani) had been appointed permanent representative of Saxony in Rome, more a honorary title than an operational task. He took the opportunity to publish two journals: the "Literary Ephemerides of Rome" (1772-1798) and the "Roman Anthology" (1774-1790).

Morning foggy, wind SWerly, temperature 78°. The papers of yesterday brought me last evening by Joseph Longstreth announce an entire change in the British Ministry, the old friends of the Prince Regent are to come in--also a French decree bearing date 28 April 1811 immediately after hearing of the Act of Congress 1 March preceding; but where has this decree repealing the Berlin and Milan decrees been concealed for more than a year, tho so often called for, risum teneatis (can you help laughing?)! The British Orders in Council will now be void until Britain hears of our Declaration of War. Strange situation in which that hasty measure has pleased us! The clouds broke, rose and passed .. .. to let the sun appear frequently which raised the temperature at 2 to 91° and after to 92° but clouds supervening it fell and at 4 was at 87°.
