Morning cloudy, wind Eerly, like for rain. Spent the morning downtown. JS Lewis has a letter from Redwood June 9th with orders to make insurance on goals .. Minerva Smith from Kiel $1200. It cannot be done for less than 50 ... some ask 75. I gave no advise. JSL thinks it not worth while to insure. MGF[?] has no letter. TG has letter from J. The Bainbridge was to sail the 10th June. Spring tide to come out of dick the night of 8/9th. I gave information at the Customs House against[?] her as infringing the non intercourse law. TG dined with me at SL's. Soon after I left town to visit Judge Peters at Belmont intending to cross the Schuylkill at the Falls and return home in the evening, but I had scarcely alighted when it began to rain and continued violent till near 6 when I set off and got to SL's about dark and got home 20th.

Elvis 30th anniv. tribute thread
I was on the train alone going from Florence back to Rome and a young (though slightly older than me) American couple in the same compartment asked:
"Hey, did you hear that Elvis Presley died?"
"No."
"It happened a week ago."
"Oh."
I was very uncomfortably hungover from too much drinking the night before at The Red Garter, and then falling asleep on some curb with an even more drunk roommate of our group. I specifically left Florence as early as possible to avoid traveling back to Rome with the excessive chatter of the rest of our group.
And 30 years ago today I fell asleep on the steps of Il Redentore (waiting till it opened) after the unplanned coincidence of reading page 42 (page 36 of 2nd edition) of Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture.
There's now a little plaque on the steps that says This spot is a supernal resting place.
